Wherever Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, is; and wherever Arjuna, the wielder of the bow, is; there is prosperity, victory, happiness, and a firm policy; this is my conviction.

Yoga through Understanding the Three Modes of Material Nature

A lucid translation of the whole chapter

The Divine Lord spoke: I shall now reveal to you that supreme wisdom, the most excellent of all knowledge, by which all the sages have attained the highest perfection and liberation. Those who take refuge in this understanding attain a nature like My own; they are not born again when the cycle of creation begins, nor are they disturbed when the universe dissolves. Understand, O Arjuna, that the vast material nature, the *Brahma*, is the womb in which I place the seed of all life. From this union, all living beings are born. Whatever forms emerge in any species, the great material nature is their mother, and I am the seed-giving Father. The entire material world is governed by three fundamental qualities or *gunas*, born of nature: *sattva* (goodness), *rajas* (passion), and *tamas* (ignorance). These forces bind the eternal soul within the body. Of these, *sattva*, being stainless, luminous, and healthy, binds the soul through attachment to happiness and knowledge. *Rajas*, of the nature of desire and craving, binds the soul through attachment to worldly activity and the fruits of labor. *Tamas*, born of ignorance, deludes all embodied beings, binding them through heedlessness, laziness, and sleep. These three qualities are constantly in conflict, struggling for dominance. When *sattva* prevails, the light of wisdom shines through every gate of the body. When *rajas* rises, it brings greed, restless activity, and insatiable longing. When *tamas* dominates, it manifests as darkness, inertia, confusion, and error. The state of one’s consciousness at the time of death determines their future path. If one departs while *sattva* is predominant, they attain the pure, higher realms of the wise. If they die under the influence of *rajas*, they are reborn among those attached to worldly action. If they depart in the darkness of *tamas*, they are reborn into the conditions of the thoughtless and the dull. Thus, the fruit of good action is pure, the fruit of passion is sorrow, and the fruit of ignorance is delusion. From goodness comes knowledge; from passion comes greed; and from ignorance come negligence and confusion. Those established in goodness ascend; the passionate remain in the middle; and the ignorant fall into lower conditions. When a wise person perceives that the *gunas* are the only true agents of all action, and understands that the Supreme Divine exists beyond these qualities, they reach My own state. The embodied soul that transcends these three modes, which arise from the body, is freed from the sufferings of birth, death, and old age, and attains the nectar of immortality. Arjuna then asked: "What are the marks of one who has risen above these three qualities, O Lord? How does such a person behave, and by what means do they transcend the *gunas*?" The Divine Lord replied: One who has transcended the modes does not hate the light of knowledge, the activity of passion, or the delusion of ignorance when they appear, nor do they crave them when they cease. They remain established in their own nature, like one who is unconcerned, unmoved by the interplay of the *gunas*. They remain centered, knowing that it is only the qualities of nature that are acting. Being balanced in pleasure and pain, self-contained, and seeing a lump of clay, a stone, and gold as the same, they remain steady. They are the same toward the pleasant and the unpleasant, toward praise and blame, honor and dishonor, friend and foe. Having renounced all sense of being the "doer" of worldly undertakings, such a person is said to have transcended the modes of nature. Finally, know that the one who serves Me with unalloyed and unwavering devotion truly transcends these three *gunas* and becomes fit for the state of liberation. For I am the foundation of the eternal Brahman, the source of immortality, the immutable Dharma, and the supreme, everlasting bliss.
