Deep Meaning · English
This verse marks the climax of Arjuna's internal collapse before the battle of Kurukshetra. It is not merely a momentary hesitation, but a profound crisis of identity where the social, emotional, and moral frameworks Arjuna has lived by are suddenly rendered meaningless by the presence of his own kinsmen in the opposing ranks. By addressing Lord Krishna as 'Krishna,' the Arjuna who was once a fearless warrior now reveals himself as a vulnerable soul seeking refuge in the divine, even if he does not yet realize the full magnitude of who stands beside him. The term 'yuyutsum' (eager to fight) juxtaposed against 'sva-janam' (one's own people) highlights the unbearable dissonance Arjuna feels: the duty of a warrior is clashing violently with the dharma of love and familial loyalty. This internal friction is the necessary catalyst for the Gita; it represents the moment the ego's limited perspective hits a wall, creating the space required for the higher wisdom of the Divine to descend. It signifies the transition from the worldly struggle to the spiritual battle, where the true conflict is not between armies, but between the soul's attachment to transitory relations and its need for eternal Truth.
Arjuna’s descent into despair is the essential surrender of the ego's finite perception, acting as the divine threshold where individual confusion meets the clarity of Universal Consciousness.
