Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Krishna speaks to the profound equanimity of the realized soul. By 'knowing' these two paths—the path of light (devayana) and the path of smoke (pitryana)—the yogi transcends the duality of cosmic cycles. The ignorance that causes bewilderment arises from identifying with the limited ego that fears death or seeks specific heavenly outcomes. When the seeker recognizes that both paths are merely different states within the manifestation of the Divine, they cease to be deluded by the allure or fear of the afterlife. This understanding shifts the focus from 'where one goes' to 'how one exists' in the present moment. The instruction to be 'yoga-yuktaḥ' (always connected in Yoga) at all times is the pinnacle of Krishna’s teaching. It suggests that the spiritual life is not a preparation for a future event, but a constant, unbroken integration of consciousness with the Supreme. By anchoring oneself in the Divine Presence, the distinction between life and death dissolves, and the yogi attains a state of eternal poise, unswayed by the shifting currents of time or cosmic destiny.
True spiritual maturity lies in transcending the preoccupation with afterlife destinations by remaining eternally anchored in the Divine presence through constant yoga.
