Deep Meaning · English
In this pivotal verse, Lord Krishna shatters the illusion of time and individual identity that fuels Arjuna's grief. By asserting that there was never a time when He, Arjuna, or the kings did not exist, nor will there be a time when they cease to be, Krishna shifts the focus from the transient physical form to the immutable Self (Atman). This is the foundation of Advaita philosophy: the realization that the essential nature of the soul is unborn, undying, and eternally present. Krishna is teaching Arjuna that death is merely a transformation of the mask, not the destruction of the actor. The 'I,' 'you,' and 'these kings' refer not to the bodily identities that are currently locked in conflict, but to the eternal consciousness that witnesses the flux of temporal events. When we identify with the changing body, we experience suffering, but when we recognize our permanence as the Self, fear dissolves into the peace of eternity. This profound teaching serves to detach the mind from the perceived trauma of mortality and anchors it in the changeless truth of the spirit.
True existence is not defined by birth or death, but by the eternal, unchanging consciousness that witnesses all forms of temporary change.
