Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Krishna transitions from the metaphysical nature of Brahman to the practical mechanics of the soul’s departure from the body. He addresses the 'time' (kala) of death, not merely as a chronological marker, but as a state of consciousness and cosmic alignment. For the Yogi, 'time' is symbolic of the specific paths of light and shadow—the Uttarayana and Dakshinayana—which represent the states of illumination versus ignorance. Krishna is revealing that the trajectory of the soul is determined by the clarity of one's inner light at the moment of transition; those who remain anchored in the Absolute depart into the luminous path of no-return (anavritti), while those bound by worldly desires return to the cycle of samsara (avritti). This is a call to maintain constant meditative absorption, ensuring that the inner lamp of consciousness does not flicker when the final transition arrives. It bridges the gap between the internal yoga of the mind and the external cosmic rhythms that govern the manifest universe. Ultimately, Krishna assures Arjuna that this knowledge is the key to liberation, inviting him to transcend the fear of death by mastering the art of living in eternal awareness.
The 'time' of departure is not a fleeting moment on a clock, but the permanent state of one's consciousness, which dictates whether the soul ascends into the Infinite or descends back into the cycles of rebirth.
