Deep Meaning · English
This verse marks a profound psychological and spiritual shift in Arjuna. Moving beyond the intellectual curiosity of the previous chapters, he is now overwhelmed by the 'vismaya'—a sacred, ecstatic astonishment that transcends mere surprise. It is the encounter of the finite self with the Infinite Reality, where the limitations of the human psyche are momentarily suspended. The physical manifestation of his reaction, the 'hṛiṣhṭa-romā' (hair standing on end), indicates that the revelation has bypassed the intellect and permeated his very biological and nervous system, signifying a total somatic and spiritual surrender. By bowing his head and folding his hands, Arjuna embodies the perfect posture of a seeker before the Divine. This is the synthesis of Jñāna (knowledge) and Bhakti (devotion); he realizes that the one he addressed as a friend and charioteer is, in truth, the substrate of all existence. His action is a symbolic dissolution of the ego, an admission that the 'conqueror of wealth' (Dhanañjaya) must now surrender to the conqueror of death and time. This moment serves as the psychological prerequisite for the ensuing dialogue, where Arjuna must transition from a state of emotional shock to one of clear-sighted devotion.
True spiritual realization begins where the ego-centric intellect ceases to categorize the world, leading to a state of humble, ecstatic surrender before the Infinite.
