When the wisdom-light shines through every gate of this body, then it may be known that Sattva is predominant.
Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Bhagavan Krishna provides an empirical diagnostic tool for the seeker to gauge the internal state of their consciousness. He describes 'the gates of the body'—the senses—as the conduit through which light (prakasha) and knowledge (jnana) flow. When an individual experiences clarity, intellectual sharpness, and a sense of harmony that permeates their perception, it is a clear indicator that the quality of Sattva (goodness) is currently dominant in the field of their existence. This is not merely an intellectual understanding, but an experiential realization where the inner 'fog' of confusion is lifted, allowing the divine light of the Self to reflect more clearly through the medium of the mind. From the Advaita perspective, this illumination is the precursor to Self-knowledge, as the mode of goodness acts as a transparent lens through which the truth of Brahman can eventually be intuited. In the context of Bhakti, this state of purity is the soil in which devotion takes root, as a mind clouded by passion or lethargy cannot perceive the subtle presence of the Divine. By identifying these 'gates' as illuminated, the seeker learns to consciously cultivate the conditions—such as serenity, study, and ethical conduct—that sustain this mode, thereby creating a fertile environment for the ultimate awakening of consciousness.
The rise of clarity and wisdom in the senses is the definitive marker that one has transcended base impulses and entered the luminous state of Sattva, which serves as the necessary foundation for spiritual liberation.
