Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Arjuna is not merely witnessing a spectacle; he is experiencing the shattering of his limited, subject-object perception. By describing the Cosmic Form (Vishvarupa) as having 'many faces, eyes, and weapons,' the text signals that the Divine is not an entity located in one place, but the totality of existence itself—simultaneously the source of creation and the instrument of destruction. The 'wonderful visions' serve to evoke a sense of awe (adbhuta-rasa) that strips away Arjuna’s ego-driven fear and hesitation, forcing him to recognize that the battlefield is a stage where the Divine Will acts through all forms. From the perspective of Advaita, this verse invites the seeker to look past the 'many' to perceive the 'One' that holds them all. The ornaments and weapons represent the paradox of the Divine: the creative beauty of manifestation and the fierce power that dissolves it. Arjuna’s vision is a profound initiation; he is no longer seeing Krishna as his friend and charioteer, but as the ground of all being. This realization is essential for his transformation, as it shifts his duty from a personal burden to a sacred participation in the cosmic order, ultimately leading to the surrender required for true Bhakti.
The Cosmic Form reveals that all multiplicity is held within the unity of the Divine, where creation and dissolution are but two aspects of the same infinite reality.
