Deep Meaning · English
In this verse, Krishna unveils the mystery of His divine nature, distinguishing His descent (avatara) from the cycle of reincarnation that binds the jiva. While the human soul is caught in the currents of karma, experiencing birth and death as a process of ignorance and evolution, Krishna’s 'birth' is a deliberate, divine projection of his unmanifest essence into the manifest realm. He is the witness-consciousness (Sakshi) who remains anchored in eternity, even while participating in the flow of time. By telling Arjuna that He remembers all, Krishna asserts His omniscience, positioning Himself as the eternal ground of existence upon which all historical events and personal histories unfold. This insight is crucial for Arjuna’s transformation, as it shifts the perspective from the temporal ego—focused on family, lineage, and temporary morality—to the trans-temporal reality of the Self. Krishna is teaching Arjuna that behind the shifting masks of personality and circumstance lies an unchanging reality that remembers its own divinity. By recognizing this, Arjuna is invited to transcend his limited individual consciousness and align himself with the cosmic order, realizing that Krishna is not merely a charioteer, but the timeless Lord of the entire creation, orchestrating the past, present, and future from within the heart of all beings.
Krishna reveals that while the jiva is trapped by karmic amnesia, He remains the eternal, omniscient Witness who purposefully descends into time without being bound by it.
